The book of 1 Peter was addressed to Christians (1 Peter 4:16). In describing those Christians, Peter said, "You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ... But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation..." (1 Peter 2:5, 9). In this passage, we see that Peter refers to Christians as a "priesthood" twice. Since a priesthood is made up of priests, the obvious conclusion is that Peter was calling each of those to whom he wrote "priests." When we study the new covenant, we learn that all members of the Lord's body are priests. This may come as a shock to some, but it is true nonetheless
If Jesus made us priests, then we are priests, but it would be wrong to boast about being a priest or use it as a title. Also, we may need to explain this fact to others, who are not familiar with the Bible's teaching on this topic. However, the truth is clearly taught in the Scriptures that all Christians are priests.
Under the law of Moses, it was the duty of Israel's priests to offer animal sacrifices (Exodus 29:38-42). However, Christians, as priests, do not offer animal sacrifices, but instead offer "spiritual sacrifices" (1 Peter 2:5) and "the sacrifice of praise" (Hebrews 13:15).
In the New Testament, "priest" is not a religious title. It is a description of all who belong to and serve Christ.
