Did Jesus Accept Worship?
Rafael Ramírez

The identity of Jesus is widely debated, but examining how His closest followers treated Him provides a clear answer. In Matthew 4:10, Jesus explicitly states that religious worship (proskunéō) belongs exclusively to God. Yet, in that same Gospel, Jesus repeatedly accepts this exact worship from His disciples (Matthew 14:33; 28:17).

For example, after Jesus walked on water, "those who were in the boat worshiped [proskunéō] Him, saying, 'You are truly God’s Son!'" (Matthew 14:33). Later, after His resurrection, His disciples worshiped Him again (Matthew 28:17). Instead of rebuking them for idolatry, Jesus accepted their worship, declaring, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me" (Matthew 28:18). Matthew also records a leper, a ruler, a Canaanite woman, and the mother of James and John worshiping Jesus (8:2; 9:18; 15:25; 20:20). A demon-possessed man and a formerly blind man are recorded doing the same by Mark (5:6-7) and John (9:35-38).

While the Greek word proskunéō can occasionally mean a general bow of respect to a dignitary, the context of these passages shows these individuals were offering true divine adoration. This leaves us with a profound logical conclusion: Jesus taught that worship belongs only to God, yet He accepted it Himself. Since the Scriptures confirm Jesus never violated the law (Hebrews 4:15; John 8:46), He could not have committed the sin of accepting misplaced worship. By rightfully receiving the adoration that belongs only to deity, Jesus affirmed that He is God.

Philosophy of the School

The WVBS Online Bible School is designed to provide students with an online, comprehensive, in-depth study of the Bible. The lessons are pure non-denominational teaching based on an accurate "drawing out" of what the Bible teaches, not reading into the text what someone might think it teaches. The courses cover every book in the Bible, plus four additional subjects which help you in your understanding of the scriptures (Christian Evidences, Hermeneutics, Greek and How We Got the Bible). The school is designed for anyone who wants a focused, organized and thorough study of the Bible.

We Need Your Help

As a student, you know better than anyone the value of these courses. Since the resources of the school are given freely to the students, we must ask congregations of the Lord's church to help support our efforts.

I hope you are willing to talk to the elders or leaders of the congregation where you attend to see if they would consider helping the school.

Please understand, we do not require donations from our students. However, if your congregation would like to help the ongoing efforts of the school, we would be honored to accept any financial help they can give.

This Year Their Gift Can Be Doubled!

Thanks to a charitable contributor, every dollar of their donation between November 1st and the end of 2026 will be matched up to $75,000. This wonderful opportunity to automatically double their donation will only be here until December 31st.

If they would like to donate they can go to the following link:

This will allow them to make a payment to WVBS as a donation using Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Visa.

Thank you again and may God bless you.
